What to expect on your first day

Moving day is an exciting step, but it can feel like a lot to take in. A little preparation can make everything run more smoothly and help you settle into your new home with ease.

Collecting your keys
You’ll collect your keys from your letting agent or landlord. It’s worth checking that you’ve also received anything else you may need, such as access fobs, entry codes or parking permits.

Checking the property
Take some time to walk through the property and make sure everything is as expected. It can be helpful to refer back to the inventory report and note anything that may need to be highlighted.

Taking meter readings
Record your gas, electricity and water meter readings on the day you move in. Sharing these with your utility providers will help ensure your accounts are set up accurately from the start.

Unpacking the essentials
To make things easier, focus on unpacking the items you’ll need straight away, such as bedding, kitchen essentials and toiletries. The rest can follow once you’ve settled in.

Safety checks
Take a moment to locate smoke alarms, exits and any safety equipment. Testing the alarms can help give you reassurance that everything is working as it should.

Setting up utilities and internet
If not already arranged, contact your providers to ensure your utilities and internet are set up and in your name, so everything is ready from the outset.

Getting comfortable in your new space
Familiarise yourself with how everything works, including appliances and heating systems. Taking a little time to understand the property will help you feel more at home.
