End of tenancy: what you need to know
If you’re coming to the end of your tenancy, there are a few key steps to take to help ensure a smooth move‑out. This guide outlines what to expect and how to prepare, so everything is handled clearly and with minimal stress.
Giving notice
As your tenancy comes to an end, it’s important to provide notice in writing in line with your agreement. With the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act, tenancies are moving towards a more flexible, periodic structure, where tenants are generally able to give two months’ notice.
As every tenancy can vary depending on when it was agreed, it’s always worth checking your agreement or speaking with your agent to ensure everything is handled correctly and with clarity.
Preparing the property
To ensure you get your full deposit back:
- Leaving the property in good condition will help ensure the return of your deposit.
- Make sure the property is thoroughly cleaned, including carpets and appliances, and take care of any minor repairs where needed. All personal belongings should be removed and any outdoor spaces left tidy and well presented.
- In some cases, professional cleaning may be required - if so, keeping receipts can provide helpful confirmation.
Final steps
On the agreed end date, all keys should be returned to us and where possible, attend the final inspection. You’ll also need to settle any outstanding utility bills and council tax, providing final meter readings to your suppliers. Once the inspection has been completed, your deposit will be returned through the relevant deposit protection scheme, with any agreed deductions clearly outlined. Remember to provide a forwarding address so we can stay in touch if needed.
